‘RHONJ’ Joe Gorga Embroiled In Low Income Housing Scandal – Tenants Risk Eviction!

Posted on Jan 17 2017 - 8:28am by BeachSpin

It’s a family affair, when it comes to deals turned shady for Real Housewives of New Jersey couple, Joe and Melissa Gorga.

Right on the heels of Melissa’s boutique, ENVY, being shut down and stripped bare, Joe Gorga has been exposed smack in the middle of his own property scandal.

The issue involves a property owned by Gorga — located at at 57 Westervelt Avenue in Hawthorne, New Jersey. A few years ago, Joe was granted permission from the Hawthorne Planning Board to convert the factory property into 31 apartments, under the condition that he would provide six low income housing units.

In July of 2014, Joe came back to the board, and was granted permission to provide the units off-site, with the intention of fulfilling his promise with three 2-family homes. Joe was eventually granted the CO (Certificate of Occupancy) for Millview Lofts without keeping his commitment.

The property was described in a 2014 listing as a “Brand New Luxury Apartment Complex @ Millview Lofts! Features Ground Level Unit With 3 Bedrooms! L/Rm/Combo Kit, Cac,Granite Tops, 3300 Sqft Roof Top Lounge Area, W/Breath Taking Nyc Skyline Views! Storage Units In Lower Level Available, On Site Parking, Elevator, Laundry On Site, High Ceilings, Bbq Area, Horse Shoe Pit, Golf Putting Green!! A Must See!! This Complex Offers Lots Of Historical Character… Full Gym Onsite.”

Local news reports that Joe has not yet secured a property intended for the affordable units. Officials were told last June that Joe was purchasing a multi-unit complex that would take care of the problem, but no closing has taken place. Joe allegedly claimed the same plan, back in 2015. Meanwhile, the developer/reality husband is collecting rent on the luxe apartments, and Passaic County public officials are being criticized by the local press, for buying a quasi-celeb’s shtick.

The only course of action is believed to be a drastic one — revoke the Certificate of Occupancy for Millview Lofts, and toss the residents out into the winter streets.

Joe Gorga is in a hot mess — one that Bravo editors can’t clean up. Stay tuned.

Truly the gorgas are no better then the guidice.

  • wellWellwell

In one episode this Peen is walking Messy down the street telling her he is giving this building and that building to each one of their kids, like he’s a mogul..LOL
Whelp they wanted to be on display..so now they are!
    Criminals all of them!

  • chacha1

Maybe Andy Cohen will have a special about poor Melissa and Joe and how everyone is picking on them because of Treape and Jailbird Joe

  • BetteDavisEyez1

Why am I not surprised?!? A whole fambly of gypsys, tramps & theives.

    • Elizabeth Fisher

      They are “drownDed” in debt…

      • BetteDavisEyez1

LMAO!! I say deport the whole lot of them.

  • Biscuit

They just need to rename the show Real Lifestyels of the Grifters and Felons. I reiterate: How long is Bravo and Andy Cohen going to continue to reward stupid?

  • Elizabeth Fisher

I don’t get the purpose of that video because there is crap everywhere on the property.

    • wellWellwell

“Whadu Dump” LOL I don’t get that video either with that silly music playing, trash all over the place and the front of a building looks like our county jail.

      • Elizabeth Fisher

Exactly. There is no landscaping. The putting green is laughable. It looks like they spent all of $30 to put one on the property. Trash is everywhere. This is more of a “why you shouldn’t buy a property from Joe Gorga” video…

        • Sandy Wood

“Luxury Apartment Complex”, I thought those were the low income units on the video.
Bare bones kitchens, the very cheapest of cabinets in the kitchen and bathrooms and laminate floors.
$2000-$2225 per month per unit according to the website. The rental market must be very good in NJ, but I would hardly call what I saw luxury.

          • EvenKeeled

The building looks like a jail.

    • Perturbed

Exactly! Plus the shoddy workmanship inside just reminds me of his work on their house – remember the realtor said the sinks were fake granite? Lol there’s no way in HELL Joe Gorga has a General Contractor’s license. I’d never live in anything he or his felon BIL touched!

  • sideof Sour Cream

I’m no Joe Gorga fan by a long shot but something seems wrong to me about government forcing a private citizen to provide “low income” anything. I thought that what taxes were for?

    • AnEnigmaWrappedIn$nark

Nothing new about offering tax breaks and subsidies etc; to developers in trade for providing low income housing (HUD). We’re experiencing in right now in my own neighborhood (converting an abandoned ginormous shopping mall into “luxury” housing).

      • Mental Iceberg 🏇

Same where I live. Everything new is “luxury” housing. 🙁

        • AnEnigmaWrappedIn$nark

Clearly, the gov’t’s idea of “luxury” living isn’t quite the same as what most of us would call “luxury” living. LoL But then again, to them making over $50K a year makes you RICH.

          • sideof Sour Cream

A few years ago our Governor Mark Dayton, multi-multi millionaire from the Dayton family (founded Dayton dept. stores, Mervyns and Target), tried to convince us all that making approx 150K not only made you “rich” but also “wealthy”.
            effin’ communist!

          • AnEnigmaWrappedIn$nark

Yes .. and then be required to a good portion of THAT away. Fcking re-distibutionists. 2 days, 7 hours, and 47 mins:-)

          • sideof Sour Cream

            I can’t wait.
Husband took the day off work. And I have 2 bottles of champagne chilling in the fridge!

          • AnEnigmaWrappedIn$nark

Awesome … we actually considered driving up to DC but you can’t get a room within 200 miles of the city and now the idiot looters and rioters “protesting students” are threatening to stop our constitutional right of “freedom of assembly”. Pretty surprising for such a dismal flop of an Inauguration right? * eye roll

          • sideof Sour Cream

It’s going to be a madhouse.
I don’t think I’d go even if I had the best room in town. After this summer I’ve had more than enough of BLM “protests”. Don’t want to be anywhere near those assholes.

          • AnEnigmaWrappedIn$nark

You and about 50+million others, IMO, Crooked HIll’s standing WITH them was the final nail in her coffin.

          • sideof Sour Cream

We think exactly the same way. & watching them all blame Putin has been surreal…

          • AnEnigmaWrappedIn$nark

I know Putin isn’t Gandhi, but I don’t know why getting along with him would be such a bad thing. You know the hate (for Trump) is real when even his accomplishments that are undeniably good for the country will be criticized.

          • sideof Sour Cream

Putin is enjoying this, and he probably wants more. Trump is smart to keep him on the line.

Democrats have lost their way. I’m sad about that as I grew up here in MN where the DFL party was at one point the party of fairness for the workers. It’s not that way anymore. Now it’s just a bunch of lazy cry-babies not willing to do what it takes to support themselves. At this point ALL their wheels are squeaking. –and there’s only so much grease to go around.

          • AnEnigmaWrappedIn$nark

The divisiveness is unhealthy and dangerous for our country, and I hate it. The DEM party has succeeded in making people (think they’re) dependent on the gov’t, and it’s now become a generational way of life for too many people. It’s the party of entitlements and extreme progressiveness. It’s become more evident that ever that liberalism sustains poverty and suffering, and punishes success. EVERYONE is never going to prosper, but it is entirely possible that EVERYONE has a shot at it. While I’ve enjoyed watching the countless meltdowns of the left, but the truth is I feel for them. We’ve all been on both sides of the game and losing isn’t fun. But at this point, enough is enough. The (paid) rioters and looters protesters are only making things worse for their party, and the left still doesn’t get that.

          • sideof Sour Cream

They never will. It’s a mind-set that is imo, inherited. We need to stop paying them to have children in order to make it stop.
and here’s the thing: you and I, we pretty much share a brain on this point! lol 🙂

          • AnEnigmaWrappedIn$nark

Politics is definitely a mind-set that unfortunately intertwines itself into almost every aspect of life … and I’ve had a hellova lot of friendships that have suffered because of it. Sometimes it’s just too much, so much so that I’ve completely walked away from two life long friendships in recent years (even before this campaign). As you can imagine, being a ‘fancy man’ AND Conservative puts me (and mine) in quite the precarious position(s). Unfortunately, we no longer have a Log Cabin chapter here in our town.

          • sideof Sour Cream

Haven’t read your post yet but just wanted to say
            MAGA!!!
Is this day GREAT OR WHAT????

            🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂

            USA! USA! USA!

trump is a piece of shit

          • AnEnigmaWrappedIn$nark

Aw don’t be angry Fred … go sleep it off sweetie.

          • fred

im all rested and feel good and trump is still a piece of shit

          • sideof Sour Cream

            PRESIDENT TRUMP

          • sideof Sour Cream

that’s President Trump to you fred.

          • sideof Sour Cream

ok, so I’m not quite sure what Log Cabin Chapter is—?? But dude I get it nonetheless. I grew up in Minnesota, voted for Mondale. yep.

Then I moved away, then I came back, voted for Jesse Ventura and then Barack Obama. and yikes finally woke up and voted for Trump. And I feel I came home again 🙂

          • sideof Sour Cream

            OK—so.
I own a log cabin. It was built in 1929. It looks out over a lake. Tell me, what the hell does “log cabin chapter” mean.

oh and ps. did Melania look like a freakin’ million billion bucks today OR WHAT>>>????
Seriously. Is there a better looking woman ever in the history of women? As a fancy boy I know you can tell me the truth about this .
            Also,
have you ever traveled to the Dominican Republic and if so what is the best hotel?

          • AnEnigmaWrappedIn$nark

Log Cabin Republicans is (was?) a nationwide organization comprised of Republican Gay Men. They close the chapter here, and I haven’t heard of them throughout the entire election, but I think they’re still around. You mentioned having a log cabin – my family still owns that little one in that little town we spoke of near Brainard and Crosby. From what I understand, it’s sort of a landmark at this point. On to Milania; she is indeed a knockout, and I thought her look(s) were perfect (serving up some Jackie O with just a little modern ‘edginess’). BTW, Ivanka is no slouch either … in fact the entire family is quite beautiful. I’ve never personally been to DR – but I do know that you don’t drink the water. My brother in law almost died from drinking the water (even at a some 5-star hotel)! Going on vacation?

          • sideof Sour Cream

My husband is a Tasmanian devil when it comes to work. He makes “club” every year at his job. This year the *reward* is in the Dominican Republic. I normally refuse to go. I have refused trips that would make most people drool. lol.
I just have no interest in beaches, ya know? I do like the 4 seasons hotels though. And that is what it would take to get me there.

omg Mike you should totally start your own chapter! Log Cabin Republicans—by $nark. I like the sound of it.

I am embarrassed by my gender today. The pussy hat, good lord. Obviously these women have never worked around real men. We’re not gonna change you. Our logic is flawed. Jane Fonda, as cute as she is, continues to disappoint.

Yes my little log cabin is exceptional. I walked into it for the first time and said “I’ll take it”. I’m not kidding.
            It’s in Aitkin.
and now I’ve said too much — 😉

            MAGA!

        • sideof Sour Cream

IKR? Granite counters and “wood” floors do not automatically equal “luxury”.

      • sideof Sour Cream

I realize it’s not new. I just don’t agree with it. As a taxpayer I am uncomfortable with govt. essentially haggling with private citizens to provide low income housing. It should be 100% a govt. project, period. I’m also not too keen on section 8 tax subsidies for landlords.
        But that’s just me 🙂

  • shayvoe

Something is missing here. Why would the county officials punish the tenants, by throwing them out in the street? It’s not their fault Joe didn’t do what he was supposed to. Why not levy fines against him or something else, why punish the tenants?

    • the underground train

My thoughts too. It doesn’t make sense.

      • shayvoe

I googled the story to get more info, but can’t find anything at all on it. I don’t understand why he had to build low income housing either if he was building luxury lofts…but after all, this is Jersey where the way they do things makes no sense to me.

  • the underground train

What was the time line for the affordable housing? It seems like he is working on it but just hasn’t closed yet on purchases for the public housing. Sounds like someone is trying to squeeze Joe out of the contract. Some public official probably wants to award the contract to another friend or family member.

    • shayvoe

      Yeah….the whole story sounds weird.

    • SmotPoker

I believe he bought the first property w intention building low income included. He must of had deal where he got discounted or grants where he had to build them. It is part of some plan the govt has. My understanding is that he needed to have certain low income acts ready before the CO. He never built them where it was intended but rented out other apts full rent. The govt or any building agencies do not play with this stuff. Now he must buy new property on his own (without aid/discount/grant/some govt help for low income) for the low income he didn’t fulfill.. If he doesn’t have the money to start this project then he could be screwed! This is only from what I hear from my husband who happens to be in this field.. I read this and that is my take on it.. Not sure if true.. I have just learned how this whole process works… Ugh! Stressful being builder and not allowed to watch HG TV !

      • the underground train

        Oh. Thanks for the clarification.

  • HWjunkie

lol luxury apartments with a tiny fridge to small for it’s spot. Why didn’t they clean up the property before they shot the video. So low rent….

    • suzanne

There is nothing luxurious about that complex or the apartment at all. It looks very builders basic to me and the out side area left a lot to be desired.

      • shayvoe

The outside looks better now that the landscaping is in and the property has been cleaned up, from the google earth view, but the inside is very basic. A 2 bedroom rents for $2200. Kitchen is awful, bathrooms very basic.

    • TartLemon

IMO, the video was shot AFTER they cleaned up the property. I can only imagine how it looked before.

      • the underground train

WTF! You have got to be joking.

    • suse

Yes, as I mentioned elsewhere, it looked like big box, lowest line, and ON SALE. 🙁

  • WMK

Normally in a contract issue I’m like “meh contract issues are pretty par for the course.” But this one makes me truly mad. He knew his duty and that city let him slide and slide and slide and I hope his a** does get in a world of crap and the people that keep letting him through get called out too.
Then again we saw his “Grand abilities” when they went to sell their own home and had shoddy work to the point the agent dropped them. So yeah, he knows how to make something “look” luxurious with particle board underneath. I can’t even imagine how horrid a job he would do on low income properties.

    • suse

Sorry, I saw NOTHING luxurious in that video. Looked like big box, lowestline + on sale at that. About his “duty?” Why is it his “duty” to supply low-income housing. These are tax shelters. Someone redid the math and, most likely, saw that the rental income outweighed the tax break. Also, when you put in low-income, you cannot charge high rent in the other units. Nobody wants to work super hard to pay more for the same thing. Just facts.

  • suse

Low income units usually get you tax breaks (and, subsequently, lower property value 🙁 ). So, he doesn’t get the tax breaks — what would be any other reason to do such? I don’t get it. (BUT, I have had to move after apartments came in “allocating” so many apartments near our neighborhood to low income. It snowballs and is the beginning of the end.

  • Lil Boo

Those apartments are not luxury apartments.

  • mrsjennyk78

Why the shots of the garbage and dirty floors? The fridge is too short for the space and the toilet is in a strange spot. They couldn’t stage 1 unit? Looks very shoddy, but then again look who we’re talking about.

  • Robyn McLeod

The bald creep sold his parents house from under them to pay his debts imagine how his father felt working all his life to be told his home was not his anymore he had to leave. That is why Teresa was angry with them had nothing to do with the show she was shocked to find out what he did.All he did was trash her every chance because he was panicking she would spill it on the show. he and Melissa are just disgusting lowlife what an embarrassment to his family

    • shayvoe

Nobody can sell someone else’s home out from under them. IF the senior Gorga’s did use their home as collateral for a loan for Joey, or whatever financial gymnastics these people do, the Sr. Gorga had to agree and sign off. I would think the bigger embarrassment to his family would be his daughter and SIL felons.

  • Carmen

Like we didn’t see this coming from the Gorga’s.
