Many of you know Bruce Jenner as the dad on “Keeping Up with the Kardashians.” Long before that, in 1976, Bruce was an Olympic gold medal winner. He was an American hero, the guy on the Wheaties box, named the greatest athlete in the world. The Diane Sawyer interview was a touching farewell to Bruce Jenner. Sort of like watching a living funeral, he said this would be the last time we would see Bruce before he reemerges as “her.” The new name is never revealed, for now, Bruce wanted to protect it.

As Bruce and Diane sat down, immediately he was on the verge of tears from the weight of his announcement. He’s been thinking of this day forever, wondering how to tell his story. Bruce asks that we keep an open mind and sense of humor. Since the age of eight, when he secretly tried on his sister’s dress, Bruce has known the truth about himself. The truth is, he has the brain and soul of a female. His fear of dying before exploring this side of him makes it impossible to continue to live a lie. His only concern was to not hurt his family.

Bruce looks back at the Montreal Olympics as a man, “scared and running for his life.” Trying so hard to be person, the man, everyone thought he was. At the time, Bruce was married to first wife, Chrystie, who eventually learned of his need to cross-dress. They had two kids, but after seven years, Bruce fell in love with second wife, Linda. It was explained that Bruce desires women, though he isn’t a lesbian, nor has he ever been with a man. Confused? Here’s what the professionals say it boils down to:

Desire: “Who you go to bed with”

Gender: “Who you go to bed as”

In the 1980’s, after his second marriage ended, Bruce began hormone therapy, transitioning into a woman. If he was out of town giving a motivational speech, he often put on a dress and went out. Five years later, Bruce “lost his nerve” and stopped the hormones. Enter, Kris Kardashian. When they met, Bruce said it was electric. He also said Kris knew about the hormones and the cross-dressing all along. In fact, when the two met, Bruce had small breasts. Sixteen years into the marriage, the juggernaut show “Keeping Up with the Kardashians” entered the world, trapping him. The irony is, the entire time they were filming (8 years / 425 episodes) Bruce knew he was the one with the most interesting storyline. But he couldn’t tell it.

Bruce has six biological kids and four step-kids and still wishes to be called, “Dad.” After 23 years, the marriage between Kris and Bruce crumbled. Bruce said they’d still be together “if Kris would have been able to deal with it.” And as we know, Kris was not able to deal and they separated. ABC News reached out to all of Bruce’s ex wives for comment, only Chrystie and Linda gave their full support; Kris had no comment. When word of the Adam’s apple operation leaked, outing Bruce, he briefly considered suicide, but now sees this as his mission and what he was put on earth to do.

Although all of Bruce’s children are said to be supportive, only his four oldest biological children participated in the Diane Sawyer interview. Of the Kardashian’s, the most supportive is Kim. The person struggling the most is Khloe. Kylie and Kendall have said, “If he’s happy, we’re happy.” Turns out, years ago, Kim saw Bruce in a dress, though they never really discussed it. Kim’s epiphany of support came with the help of husband, Kanye West. Simply put, nothing matters if you can’t be yourself. Since then, Kim has given Bruce the advice, “Girl, you gotta rock it.” If nothing else, the Kardashian’s will make sure that Bruce is one hell of a fashionista. Kim tweeted her support during the interview, “Your honesty has opened the doors for others to be courageous and live an authentic life! #respect #hero #family,” along with a poignant photo of her and Bruce.

A new docu-series by E! will begin in July and follow Bruce’s process of his transition. He doesn’t consider himself a spokesperson, but wants to help the community and save lives since suicide and murder occur regularly in the transgender community. As for whether he’ll fully transition, Bruce hasn’t decided yet. First he must live one year as a woman. And for now, Bruce isn’t thinking about romantic relationships, he just wants to enjoy life. A portion of the press release states,

“Ground-Breaking, Authentic, Eight-Part One-Hour Documentary Series Premieres Sunday, July 26 at 9:00pmET/PT on E! Please note, at this time, Bruce Jenner is choosing to not live publicly in the media as a woman and will be referred to as Bruce Jenner and with male pronouns in this announcement. Bruce is incredibly courageous and an inspiration, and we are proud to be entrusted with this deeply personal and important story,” said Jeff Olde, Executive Vice President, Programming and Development, E! This series will present an unfiltered look as Bruce boldly steps into uncharted territory and is true to himself for the first time.”

That evening, Bruce wore a black dress and dined with Sawyer. No cameras were present, no photos were taken. Sawyer said that Bruce “looked great and really happy.” His sister Pam and 89 year-old mom love Bruce and fully support him. The farewell interview to Bruce had a somber tone, but there was a hopeful ending, and for “her” an optimistic beginning.

*During the interview, Diane Sawyer briefly mentioned the tragic auto accident Bruce Jenner was involved in last February. Due to pending investigation, Bruce could not talk about it. Sawyer reported that Bruce told the entire story to ABC News. Diane was “devastated” by his account.
